Living and working in Waitaha Canterbury

Ōtautahi Christchurch sits within the Waitaha Canterbury region. It is New Zealand’s second largest city and the main population hub in Te Waipounamu South Island, with a multi-cultural population of 407,503.

Located on the east coast of Te Waipounamu, it’s the gateway to many outdoor activities, including fishing, skiing, tramping, mountain biking, and more.

This region features a varied landscape, including beaches, braided rivers, vast plains and the Southern Alps.

Even though the city has suffered earthquake damage, the rebuild effort continues to create a vibrant place to live and work. It has an active business and education workforce, along with plenty of innovative art, culture, shopping, great food, and many wineries nearby.

The moderate climate in Ōtautahi suits year round recreational and leisure activities and many of our Pegasus Health team make the most of having such a great playground on their doorstep.

What's it like moving to Aotearoa New Zealand?

Ruoxuan Cai and Maddalena Caprotti - Medical Officers

(Ruoxuan, above pictured left, Maddalena, pictured right)

After migrating from the United Kingdom (UK), Ruoxuan and Maddalena have found the perfect blend of professional growth and work life balance, with supportive colleagues and enriching patient interactions at Pegasus Health 24 Hour Surgery (24HS) making their international move a rewarding adventure.

In September 2023, we moved from the UK to Christchurch to join 24HS as medical officers on a working holiday visa. At first, we were daunted by the idea of moving so far away, but the many similarities between Christchurch and the UK have made for a smooth transition.

We were drawn to the 24HS because it offered direct patient care and the chance to work similar shifts. It’s been a game-changer for us professionally. The environment allows us to grow our clinical skills and spend more time caring for patients.

When we arrived, the Pegasus staff were incredibly supportive, helping us with our medical council registration and sharing tips about living and exploring Christchurch. Working four days a week gives us plenty of time to enjoy hobbies, like classical ballet, and explore beautiful places like the Southern Alps. The work life balance here is fantastic, giving us the flexibility to manage our schedules much better than we could in the UK.

If you’re an international medical professional considering a move, we’d highly recommend Christchurch and 24HS. If you enjoy the outdoors and are seeking a role with diverse patient interaction and significant hands-on experience, this is the ideal place to advance your career.
