Clinical Connect - Peer Education Programme

Clinical Connect Peer Education Programme* provides continuing education to primary health professionals. The programme focuses on promoting best practice and optimal use of health resources across the primary health sector.

The programme was founded in 1994 and runs in Waitaha Canterbury and in several regions across Aotearoa New Zealand.

It is designed for clinicians in primary care, including general practitioners, nurse practitioners, community pharmacists, and practice nurses.

How the programme works

The Clinical Connect – Peer Education Programme provides in depth education on topics that are engaging, relevant, and strategically important to Aotearoa’s health system. The programme promotes evidence informed practice and encourages clinicians to discuss and reflect on their own practice and that of their peers, and to apply the learning in clinical practice.

The same group of clinicians meet in real time for one and a half hours, five times per year, either physically in a meeting space or online via a zoom meeting. Groups have 12-15 clinicians attend and a trained small group leader supports the group to reflect on their practice with case studies and interactive discussions, informed by evidence and data.

Some examples of recent topics include: ‘Early Cancer Diagnosis in Primary Care’, ‘Neurodiversity with a focus on ADHD’ and ‘Heart Failure’.

*Clinical Connect – Peer Education Programme is the new name for the Pegasus Small Group Education Programme.

“First peer education meeting, I found it collegial and informative, good to be able to bring patient cases into a targeted discussion.”

“As a new primary care practitioner this education session is extremely valuable.”
