Waitaha Canterbury Community Respiratory Service

The Community Respiratory Service are a cross-sector programme working with all Primary Health Orgnaisations (PHOs), secondary care, and community care in Te Waipounamu South Island.

Hosted by Pegasus Health.

The Community Respiratory Service are a team of nurses, physiotherapists and administrators who help people with breathing disorders like emphysema and asthma. Your general practitioner (GP) can help you get a diagnosis, linking you with a provider for spirometry, a free lung function test. You can also be referred to a provider for a free sleep assessment if you might have Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA).

Our Respiratory Specialist Nursing team can help your general practice team or visit you in your home to help you with breathlessness.

Once you have a diagnosis, we can help you understand your condition and maintain or rebuild your confidence and physical strength with our Better Breathing Pulmonary Rehabilitation programme, community exercise, and coffee groups.

Our services

Respiratory Specialist Nursing Service

Three teams of respiratory nurses collaborate to support people in the community with breathing disorders.

  • CanBreathe – The local Asthma Society can help people with asthma
  • Cardio-Respiratory Integrated Specialist Service (CRISS) – This team assists people especially those who need supplementary oxygen, who have lung cancer, and a range of other significant lung disorders
  • Community Respiratory Nurses – Our team help people with COPD or asthma, but can direct people to the most appropriate services and supports available.

Your hospital specialist or general practitioner team can refer you to this service for extra help.
